Following the lockdown of the previous year, we began to stock of what really mattered to us that we may have taken for granted. One of the things that come to the surface is the time that we were able to spend with our family, and more specifically, our parents. It becomes increasingly difficult to carve time out of our busy schedules to make time for the ones we love, but one new popular feature in homes is looking to combat that - the in-law suite.

More and more families are searching for homes that are capable of housing their mothers and fathers, but in a way that fosters a sense of independence for both sides. The in-law suite has become a perfect answer to this situation as it can be a detached or attached separate section of the home with all the necessary amenities, such as a kitchen and bathroom, that come along with a full size home.

The rise of the in-law suite has been particularly attractive to those with parents that require a little extra care and attention as they continue to age. Many younger families are looking to save on the astronomical costs of nursing home, and also have some peace of mind knowing that should anything happen, they are are right there to help.

Now by this point you may be saying to yourself, “my parents are still a ways off from needing any of my help, so why would I care about an in-law suite?” The options can be advantageous, and lucrative, until the fateful move-in day rolls around. In-law suites can serve as an extra storage option for a growing family, or even as a short term rental option for families with the space to spare.

With space being considered a luxury in major metropolitan hubs such as Toronto, many young buyers are are adding this to their list of features when looking to move out of the city. Have you considered purchasing a home with an in-law suite? Let me know in the comments below.
